What is eSIM? Everything you need to know

Ever since the mobile phone was first invented, we’ve relied on physical SIM cards to connect to our chosen telecom network. Fast forward to now, and most mobile phones, cellular-connected laptops, tablets and smartwatches support eSIM, which means no more physical cards are necessary. It also means switching mobile providers is easier than ever. However, eSIM is still relatively new, and it can be confusing to those who are used to SIM cards.

In this guide, we break down everything you need to know about eSIM.

What is eSIM?

eSIM stands for embedded SIM (Subscriber Identity Module). Like a regular SIM card, an eSIM allows you to connect to your mobile provider’s network and your plan. The only difference is that it’s built into your phone (or other device) and is not tied to any one provider, meaning you can switch at any time without needing to get a new SIM.

On the downside, this means switching phones can be a little trickier, as it’s not as simple as removing a SIM card from one device and inserting it into another.

What devices support eSIM?

All flagship (and some budget) smartphones and other cellular devices released in the last few years support eSIM. Some cheaper devices may still require a physical SIM, but eSIM has been available on iPhone since 2018, Google Pixel since 2019, Samsung Galaxy devices since 2020, and OPPO phones since 2021. Some devices even allow you to have multiple eSIMs, ideal for those who frequently travel internationally.

How do you activate an eSIM?

Purchasing and activating an eSIM is simple, fast, and can be done just about anywhere at any time. Most of the providers who offer eSIM will give you the option of an eSIM or a physical SIM at checkout, but some telcos also allow you to buy an eSIM through their mobile app. Your provider will do all the hard work for you, but you might be given a set of instructions to set your eSIM up properly.

No, an eSIM doesn’t cost any more than a regular SIM card.

Can I convert my physical SIM to an eSIM and vice versa?

It depends on your provider, but in most cases, yes. This can be helpful if you’re switching to a device that does (or doesn’t) offer eSIM capabilities.

How do I move my eSIM from one phone to another?

Perhaps the only major downside of eSIM is that switching to a new device isn’t as simple as inserting your old SIM into the new phone. To do so, you’ll need to contact your provider. They’ll likely give you a new QR code to scan, which will install the eSIM onto the new phone. Some telcos may make it easier by allowing you to self-manage your eSIM from their app.
